Don’t You Hate Red Light Cameras?

If our red light cameras make our streets safer, I’m all for them. We have far too many auto and truck accidents here in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. and far too many people getting killed or injured.

But today’s Dallas Morning News reports that a lot of wrecks are caused by drivers who slow down or slam on their brakes and are rear ended at these intersections. We’re representing plenty of people injured when this happens.

And the process involved can be onerous. Once his vehicle is photographed, the owner is given 30 days to either pay a fine of $75.00 or request — and attend — a hearing downtown
(or submit an affidavit and documents proving he didn’t own the vehicle). Most people pay the fine.

But the cameras can be unreliable. Lots of cars are speeding through the intersection. License plates can be hard to see. My paralegal just spoke out against these cameras on a local news station when he was wrongly ticketed.

We all know why they exist: they generate a lot of money to cities. Fort Worth earns $12 million a year – split with the installer and state – the same as Dallas. Really? Many cities have taken the cameras down or curtailed their use, but we added 10 new cameras last fall.
