Car rental company Avis announced that it will purchase car-sharing company startup Zipcar for approximately $500 million in a deal that both sides hope will help expand the service to many new markets. Currently, Zipcar operates mostly in large metropolitan areas and in college towns where there are a large number of occasional drivers.
By adding the fleet and resources of a larger company, Zipcar hopes to be able to open in smaller cities that it cannot currently afford to work in.
I hope that users of the service will be safe drivers. Unfortunately, there since many of the Zipcar customers are inexperienced. They do not drive often and may not be fully comfortable driving. I’m sure there will be a study conducted showing the average number of accidents in Zipcars.
