Car Plunges Off Fort Worth Bridge, Seriously Injuring Two Women

Unfortunately for several Fort Worth residents, the 4th of July proved to be a nightmare, not a celebration. Early Friday morning two women were seriously injured after their four-door sedan plunged off of the bridge in the 900 block of Northeast 28th Street near the Fort Worth Stockyards and hit the creek bed 30 feet below. The women were trapped inside their vehicle until emergency crews rescued them. One woman is in critical condition and the other is in serious condition at John Peter Smith Hospital. My prayers go out to them and their families.

The road on which the accident occurred is presently under construction with cones and barriers lined up throughout. Investigators are trying to determine whether the construction caused confusion during the dark early morning hours. The bridge remained closed for hours on Friday morning after the mishap.

The details of the accident are still being investigated, but there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.

As noted in a previous post, the 4th of July holiday is one of the most dangerous times to be driving in both Texas and across the country. In Texas, the 4th of July death rate is greater than that of New Year’s Eve and Day combined. Last year, 54 Texans were killed and 1,124 were arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Why is the 4th of July so much worse than other holidays? There is the all-day celebration atmosphere, but that is true with the New Year’s holiday as well. It is possible that with longer, lighter days, more people are getting on the road after spending more hours drinking. The heat and sun may compound the problem, causing people to become more dehydrated, or even simply drowsier than they might be during the cooler months.

Overall, the National Highway Safety Council has estimated that 127 deaths occur each year, which means that Texas accounts for nearly half of them. July 5th is right behind with 122. That is why it is important for every person to monitor his or her alcohol intake before getting on the road, or to watch out for others who have not taken due care.

Far too many drivers fail to take the privilege of driving seriously. We here in Texas have far too many injuries, far too many fatalities due to drunk driving. Victims of these entirely preventable crashes can get their damages paid by making a claim or by filing a lawsuit against the responsible driver, the owner of the vehicle, and/or other parties.
