Here’s a wild one: Dallas police arrested a drunk driver who plowed into an apartment complex around midnight on Saturday night.
Jameel Moffett, 35, was arrested after careening across three lanes of traffic on R. L. Thornton Freeway, hitting a curb, destroying a fire hydrant, driving through a fence, and crashing into an apartment building. It’s a miracle noone on the busy highway or in the apartments was hurt.
Here’s a photograph of a new client’s car after a woman driving in the other direction on Interstate 20 in Mesquite crossed over two lanes and the grass median and hit him head on.
I’m guessing Moffett’s truck looked like this after the multiple collisions.
We are investigating to see whether the other driver was intoxicated or on drugs. She claims she had a tire blow out. My client was seriously injured, as you can only imagine. I just met this nice man today and he has already had back surgery and faces dental and knee surgery as well. We will file suit to uncover the truth. But as he said, it’s lucky he’s alive.
Back to our hero, Moffett ended up pinned inside his truck until emergency personnel were able to extract him. He was then transported to Baylor Hospital, arrested, and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. It is not known at this time what Moffett’s blood alcohol content was. Under Texas law, anything at or above 0.08% blood alchohol is legal intoxication. A background search revealed that Moffett had a lengthy criminal history. He was arrested previously for a DWI and convicted of marijuana possession, evading arrest, theft, and carrying a handgun.
Driving while intoxicated remains a serious problem in Texas. As noted in a previous post, Texas is number one overall in auto and truck collisions, many of which are alcohol related. Even more disturbing, Dallas had the highest rate of drunk driving deaths of 97 cities in the nation
Reasons for why this include that Dallas, like every city, was built for driving, whether you are sober or not, and stiffening open container laws guaranteed that many people would drive from “dry” areas to “wet” areas. More obviously needs to be done to discourage people from driving while intoxicated, whether that involves more driver awareness programs or more alternatives to driving, like buses and free taxis, or both. Also, a crackdown on drivers like Moffett so that they do not get multiple times to break the law without consequences is long overdue.
We need to stop the madness that has become so routine on our Dallas Fort Worth highways, especially late at night. We shoudn’t be lucky just to get home alive.
