Fort Worth firefighter injured in wreck with stolen truck

A Fort Worth man was jailed Sunday after police accused him of stealing a pickup, kidnapping his ex-girlfriend’s 4-year-old grandson and crashing the truck into a vehicle driven by an off-duty Fort Worth firefighter.

Firefighter Mark Puente, 25, was still in critical condition Monday morning, said a spokeswoman at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

Witnesses told Fort Worth police that the 57-year-old driver of the pickup drove through several red lights at high speed before he crashed the vehicle Sunday morning in the 5600 block of Bryant Irvin Road in Fort Worth.

Police were not in pursuit of the stolen truck at the time of the crash. Until they arrived on the scene, they did not know that the truck that crashed was the one reported stolen. The driver had no reason to be driving so recklessly.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Puente and his family.
