Damage Claim Filings Begin This Friday For Defective Ignition Switches
Beginning on August 1st, damage claims can be submitted for drivers who were injured or who died due to defective GM ignition switches. This office stands ready to assist you.
Over 2.6 small, often basic General Motors cars had defective ignition switches. This caused the key to suddenly turn off, shutting down the engine, brakes, steering, and air bags. Even something as minor as the driver’s knee brushing against the key ring or the vehicle hitting a pot hole could suddenly move the switch to “off” and cause a crash. It only would have cost GM 57 cents per switch to fix the problem. GM chose not to spend this paltry sum, fully aware that fatal wrecks would occur.
Lawsuits Against General Motors
Over 100 lawsuits have been filed against GM because of the defective switches. The company knew about the dangerous problem back in 2004, but chose to do nothing. It wasn’t until lawsuits were filed that the truth was uncovered.
GM has admitted that 13 people died as a result, but a leading consumer group has reported that over 300 deaths occurred — not to mention the thousands of people who have been injured, many seriously.
If someone files a damage claim, he relinquishes his right to file for damages in court, where a jury might award more compensation. GM has to be worried that verdicts will be enormous. Punitive damages alone could be astronomical.
We can evaluate your case and advise whether you should file a suit or a claim. There are other considerations, including statutes of limitation in place that limit the period of time you can file a claim or lawsuit. Legan advice is highly recommended.
Recalls And Hearings Continue
The latest problems identified are safety belts, are airbags, gearshifts and retention clips in the following vehicles: Chevrolet Traverses, 2009-2013 GMC Acadias, Buick Enclaves, 2009-2010 Saturn Outlooks, 2004-2008 Chevrolet Malibus, 2005-2008 Pontiac G6s, 2015 Cadillac Escalades, 2015 Chevrolet Silverados, and GMC Sierra HD pickups.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating 2008 Chevrolet Impala sedans because their airbags did not deploy. The collision kicking off this debacle happened here in Texas when a man was killed and his wife were critically injured in 2011.
The United States Senate continues to hold rare public safety hearings investigating why this giant corporation that used to brag that “Quality Is Job one” did not recall its dangerous cars for over ten years.

GM has already had to issue over 60 separate recalls, bringing the number of vehicles this year to a record 29 million globally. The company has already revised its original number of those killed due to faulty ignition switches from 13 to 17 and only for Cobalts and Ions.
