Wonderful PSA From Legendary Actress
Screen and stage star Dame Helen Mirren delivered a drunk driving PSA message that is worthy of an Emmy award.
The graceful British actress has a knack for putting drunk drivers in their place. After listening to the Super Bowl PSA, anyone considering driving drunk is likely to feel like a dunce for even thinking about it, as they should.
The “notoriously frank and uncensored British lady” calls drunk drivers stupid. Delivered with poise in her lovely English accent, Mirren proclaims:
“If you drive drunk, you, simply put, are a short-sighted, utterly useless, oxygen-wasting, human form of pollution. A Darwin-award deserving, selfish coward. If your brain was donated to science, science would return it. So stop it.”
“Dumbfounded that people still drive drunk”
Mirren sums up our feelings perfectly when she says she is “dumbfounded that people still drive drunk.”
It is hard to believe that, with all we know about the horrific pain and loss caused by drunk driving, anyone would climb behind the wheel while intoxicated.
And yet, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 21 percent of fatal auto accidents involved drunk drivers. Texas tied for fifth worst state in deadly alcohol-related crashes, with 27 percent of accident deaths involving drunk drivers.
DWIs and drunk driving crashes spike during Super Bowl Sunday, placing the event in contention for the highest drunk driving rates every year, along with New Year’s Eve, St. Patrick’s Day and Fourth of July.
As Mirren puts so well….
“Your friends and family thank you, the friends and family of other drivers thank you, your future self thanks you” for not driving drunk. “This is supposed to be fun.”
And it is. Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday! Make sure your friends have a safe ride home after a game watch party and stay off the roads during the hours following the game, when unfortunately some drunk drivers are likely to act like “Darwin-award deserving, selfish cowards”
