Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s Campaign To Stop DWI’s

Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving
In 2006, in response to the over 13,000 people who were being killed each year in drunk driving crashes, MADD launched the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving. Public support for Campaign initiatives has been overwhelming.

MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving focuses on three important steps we all can take today to stop drunk driving tomorrow:
•Support our heroes. Support high-visibility law enforcement to catch drunk drivers and discourage others from driving drunk.
•Sober to start. Require ignition interlock devices, or in-car breathalyzers, for all drunk drivers, to prove they are sober before their car will start.
•Secure the future. Support the development of technology to determine automatically whether or not the driver is above the legal limit of .08 and failing to operate if the driver is drunk.

When we launched it, many people thought it was a neat slogan, but not realistic. However, after just seven years:
•24 states have mandatory all-offender ignition interlock laws, up from only one state.
•All 50 states now have some form of ignition interlock law, up from 45.
•Advanced in-vehicle alcohol detection technology is no longer just a concept, now in its second phase of development.

Today, we can see a future without drunk driving, but we need your help to get there. Please join us in the fight. Click here to sign the Campaign pledge.
