A tragic car crash left six people dead on Sunday night in southeast Oak Cliff, Dallas.
A 20-year-old man was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Impala near the 5400 block of Bonnie View Road when one of the back wheels hit the curb. The car spun swerved across three lanes of traffic and crashed into a tree.
Police say four people died at the scene and two more were taken to Baylor Hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. The deceased includes the 20-year-old driver, a 15-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy, a 21-year-old woman, a 23-year-old woman and one other male whose age was unavailable Monday.
Police say the car was speeding at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
Three teenagers in the car were students and football players at Kimball High School in Oak Cliff.
Two were freshmen, Trey Woodberry and Kentron Haskin. The other student was sophomore Desedric Johnson, who was a defensive tackle on the Knights’ junior varsity team. Haskin was a wide receiver and Woodberry would likely have been an offensive tackle.
“They were good kids and seemed like they were going to be really good leaders,” Carlton Nelson, Kimball’s football coach.
School district spokesman AndrĂ© Riley released a written statement Monday. “Dallas ISD is deeply saddened to learn that three students at Justin F. Kimball High School have died as the result of a traffic accident on Aug. 30 in Oak Cliff,” the statement said. “Grief counselors will be at Kimball and both T.W. Browne Middle School and Daniel Webster Elementary School, where siblings of the victims are enrolled, to help those school communities address this loss.”
