Recently, a driver was killed in a car accident in northwest Fort Worth after driving the wrong way along Loop 820. The crash happened at 3:30 in the morning near Marine Creek Parkway.
The driver of the Isuzu Trooper appeared to have entered the freeway from White Settlement Road. From there, he drove at high speeds for seven miles until he smashed into two other vehicles. One of the vehicles involved was a panel truck, while the other was a sedan occupied by a mother and daughter. Just earlier, the Isuzu Trooper narrowly avoided hitting two police cars that were driving in the other direction.
The Isuzu Trooper’s driver died while still at the scene. The other individuals involved were transported to the hospital, with the panel truck driver listed as being in critical condition, with injuries to both of his legs. However, he is expected to make a full recovery. One of the women in the sedan had serious injuries, while the other had just minor injuries. Police will determine from a toxicology test whether the Isuzu Trooper’s driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
This accident comes on the heels of a wrong-way accident in Irving. Just hours before, the driver of the vehicle responsible entered the southbound lanes of Loop 12 going the wrong way from Shady Grove. He crashed almost immediately into an oncoming 18-wheeler truck. The impact was so extreme that the 18-wheeler’s fuel tank ripped away, and the steering axle broke. There is no word as to whether the wrong-way driver was intoxicated at the time.
However, it is highly likely that alcohol or some illegal substance played a role in the wrong-way drivers’ decisions. That was the case with the Fort Worth wrong-way driver who caused a deadly five-car crash last month. The driver, 27-year-old Amin Alrashdan, was reportedly high on synthetic marijuana at the time he slammed into four other vehicles head-on. There were rumors of a “bad batch” of K2, the most common brand of synthetic marijuana, causing overdoses throughout Dallas and Austin in the prior weeks. If that was responsible, it would be the first time synthetic marijuana has been tied to any deaths in North Texas.
Although Alrashdan managed to survive the crash, he killed 51-year-old Malinda Miller. Another victim, Silvia Diaz, remains mostly paralyzed from the waist down and can barely move her head. They, as well as the recent deaths in wrong-way accidents, are a reminder of the tragic results when drivers treat driving like a right instead of a responsibility.
